  • One kitchen or large room, about 150 to 300 sq ft$1,700 – $4,800+

Vinyl and asphalt floor tile, sheet vinyl and the mastic that holds them down can all contain asbestos. A lab result for each layer tells us what has to come up. Positive flooring is lifted in whole pieces where it lets go and bagged on the spot, leaving the subfloor bare.

The old exemption for floor tile and sheeting ended on July 1, 2021. Since then, flooring in houses, duplexes and other buildings with no more than four units has fallen under Minnesota’s asbestos work rules like any other material. We lift kitchen, bath, entry and basement flooring for owners in Lakeville, Credit River and Farmington.

Flooring we remove

Vinyl and asphalt tile

Tile is pried up by hand, never ground or sanded off, since breaking it into fragments is how dust gets into the room.

Sheet vinyl and its backing

Older sheet flooring of the linoleum type is glued down over a paper backing. MPCA considers that backing friable in most cases, so we keep it wet as it comes up. We soak each strip, peel it off the floor and bag it on the spot.

Mastic

The adhesive under tile is sampled on its own. A tile can test clean while the glue beneath it does not, or the other way around.

Covering over

You don’t always have to pull it. MDH allows intact asbestos flooring to stay in place under a new floor covering. Tile that has cracked or started to crumble is different, because damaged flooring can release fibers.

Getting the floor ready

What we ask of you depends on the room.

Kitchens

Pull out the appliances and anything stored at floor level. Let us know whether the cabinets are staying so we can plan the edges.

Basements

Clear boxes and furniture off the floor, and show us the floor drain and sump so we can protect them.

After removal

Once the old floor is gone, the bare slab or subfloor may show cracks, damp areas or patches. We tell you what we see so the flooring installer can allow for it.
