MDH says asbestos has turned up on Minnesota homes in cement-asbestos board siding, “slate” siding, asphalt roofing shingles and roofing felt. If a new roof, new siding or an addition means it must come off, we remove it in whole pieces and wrap it for disposal.

The state’s asbestos work rules have reached roofing and siding on houses, duplexes and other buildings with four or fewer units since July 2021, and an exterior job counts just like an interior one. Our siding and roofing work covers Lakeville, Credit River and Farmington.

Exterior work

Cement siding shingles

Each cement shingle is lifted off on its own and kept whole when it allows, then stacked and wrapped in heavy plastic. MDH’s advice is to avoid breaking, cutting, drilling or sawing them.

Roofing layers

Asphalt shingles, roofing felt, underlayment, flashing and sealants all appear on MDH’s roofing list. Each layer you plan to tear off gets sampled.

Paper behind the siding

MDH warns that paper-like vapor barriers can be more of a hazard than the siding over them, because they are friable.

Leave, repair or cover

MDH’s guidance is to leave roofing and siding alone while it is in good condition and to repair damaged pieces with care. Putting new material over the old is sometimes possible, depending on local building codes.

Why condition matters

MDH considers intact asphalt or cement roofing and siding nonfriable, meaning hand pressure cannot crumble it. Heat, water, weather and age can weaken it until it becomes friable, and so can the act of taking it off.

That is why MDH strongly recommends a licensed asbestos contractor for removal. If you decide not to test, MDH’s advice is to treat the material as if it contains asbestos.
