Sampling for one project
A kitchen update might call for samples of the floor, the backsplash wall and the ceiling. Only what the work will disturb needs testing, so the list follows your plans room by room.

Testing sorts the materials in your plans into those with asbestos and those without, whether you are remodeling, changing a layout or taking a house down. We bring in an MDH-certified inspector for the sampling, an accredited lab runs the analysis, and your report lists each material with its result.
Testing can be booked by itself or as the first step before removal, for houses, rentals and building projects in Lakeville, Credit River and Farmington.

Spot samples are not enough when a house is coming down. MPCA calls for an MDH-certified inspector to go through any structure before demolition, so the survey takes in everything from the basement slab and interior finishes to the shingles and siding.
How do you read the numbers? Each sample gets its own line and its own percentage. Minnesota calls a material asbestos-containing as soon as it passes 1 percent asbestos. The counting is done by a lab holding NVLAP accreditation or AIHA bulk asbestos accreditation.
Lakeville’s young housing can save a step here. When a building was constructed after October 1988, a letter from its architect or builder confirming no asbestos was used can stand in for an inspection, according to MDH. More than 7 in 10 homes in the city were built in 1990 or later, so ask your builder whether one exists before paying for sampling.
Minnesota has no rule that every homeowner must test before remodeling. Testing still comes first in the three situations below.
This rule is about crews, not homeowners. A remodeling company with employees must arrange a survey by a qualified person before those employees begin demolition, remodeling or restoration in an area where asbestos may be present.
Different rules apply outside the home. A store, an office building or a public building needs an asbestos inspection before it is renovated or demolished, no matter what year it was built.
Farmington’s residential demolition handout says asbestos testing and abatement must be done, and the documents handed to the building official, before demolition.
